Roles of a photographer:

Set up lighting equipment.

Set up the camera on to the correct setting.

Get the aperture correct.

Getting the camera on to the correct shutter speed to prevent camera shake.

Using flash and reflectors in the correct place.

Responsibilities.

Make sure the client is safe e.g. no wires on the floor for them to trip over.

No loose lights above their head as they can fall and hit them.

Schedule appointments so you do not double book someone and have to cancel on one person.

Keep records to make sure that clients have paid and that clients have had their photographs taken.

Advertise your business properly.

If you have hired people they must make sure they are trained properly.

Salary:

Starting salary can be between £12,000 and £22,000

Some people start as assistants and they earn £10,000 a year.

Increased salaries can be anywhere between £25,000 to £60,000

people who earn more tend to have a better reputation and are highly recommended.

Working hours.

Working hours are unpredictable.

Photographers tend to be busy around spring/summer due to the increase in weddings.

Sports photographers will expect to work evenings and weekends.

Freelance photographers will have times when they are busy then followed by times where there is no work available.

What to expect:

Depending on what type of photography you are doing depends on the situation you will be in for example if you are doing a documentary it could be dangerous if you are in a war country.

Sometimes you could be in a cramped studio.

Some photography could send you around the country to large cities e.g. London.

Job security is quite low as people tend to go for photographers who already have a high reputation.

Qualifications:

A degree in one of the relevant subjects:

Art and design.

Digital imaging

Fine art.

Graphics.

Media

Photography.

Skills.

Excellent skills such as being able to work digital and non-digital cameras as well as software such as Photoshop.
