When advertising a product e.g. a bottle of wine, the bottle will be lit up from the back/sides by using long lights, a reflective surface is used to make the photo look better, it also creates depth within the image as it reflects the bottle but also brings light back into the product and also the main section of the image.

This photo was lit by using the front light only, no side lights were included in this lighting set up as you can see the sides of the bottle are not lit which also shows that the bottle does not stand out from the background this also makes the image successful as it makes the bottle look dramatic and it would work if it was used as an advertisement

This photo was lit up by using the side lights, no front lights were involved, you can see this as the brand label can not be seen yet you can only see the outline of the bottle and not much else which in an advertisement would make it look dramatic and create a sense of wonder as to what the contents of the bottle is.

The image on the right was lit by using two side lights and a front light, the side lights can be seen in the photo on the left.
The final image on the right looks like something that would be used in an advertisement as the bottle has been lit on the sides which extracts it from the background and the front light has lit the label which is important when advertising a product, the way the bottle has been lit shows all the elements of the bottle e.g. the brand and also what the bottle would like in a store.

The photograph on the left shows the start of the product being poured and the photo on the right shows more of the product in the glass, these photographs look like they were taken for a advertisement as the bottle was photographed with different set of lights and these photographs show the product being poured from the first moment that it landed in the glass from the product half filling the glass, these photographs show the movement of the product as it swills around the glass and also the bubbles within the liquid shows that it is fresh out of the bottle and wasn't exposed to the air for a while, if this was used as an advertisement then it shows the buyers exactly what it looks like.
I then went into the studio with my own props to do test shots with and this was my outcome.

i used side lighting and dimmed the front light so the book cover was not over exposed, i used a reflective surface so the book and speakers have a reflection from the bottom, this makes the photograph of the product look better and shows the product off, rather than having it on a matte surface which would absorb the light rather than reflecting it back into the product like the reflective surface does, when the light bounces back onto the product, it makes the product light up and stand out more from the background.
I feel my photos could have been better, i can improve this by doing more research before going into the studio however i think my photos came out good because i managed to use the side lights and a front light to light up the image and i used a reflective surface to create a better set of photographs rather than the surface being a matte black that gives off no reflection and does not bounce the light onto the product.

I found this photograph on google images.
If I photograph a book again, i will try to replicate this image as it has inspired me to look closer when taking photographs, the reflective surface gives the photograph depth.

The photograph on the left is from google images, the image on the right is a photograph that i took when in the studio using side and front lights and a reflective surface, when comparing someone else's to my own image, my image has more depth and more atmosphere were as the other image is bland as the background is plain white and has no depth and is a really basic photograph.
